Police Search for Gunmen Who Shot 4-Year-Old Girl in Drive-By

Dallas police say the actions of officers helped save a 4-year-old's life after she was shot in the leg by three gunmen, who remained on the run Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the incident began at 3:37 p.m. Saturday when officers were called to a shooting near North Marsalis Avenue and East 6th street in Oak Cliff. Minutes later, An officer working security for MegaFest in downtown Dallas was flagged by a distraught mother, police said.

The mother told J. Saldana three men in a vehicle shot at her family of four, injuring her four-year-old daughter in the leg, police said.

While paramedics were on their way, Dallas officers C. Mattox and Jesus Tovar applied a tourniquet to the girl's leg to stop the bleeding, police said. Paramedics arrived at 3:45 p.m. to take the girl to the hospital.

According to police, officer Mattox remained by the girl's side, held her hand, and kept her distracted as they rode in the ambulance to the hospital. Mattox said the girl was "a trooper" as she remained calm and alert despite her injuries, police said.

Youth investigators took control of the investigation and interviewed witnesses Saturday evening. There was no immediate confirmation to the girl's condition Saturday.
