A medium-sized alligator said to be on the loose in south Dallas turned out to be a caiman shorter than 8 inches in length.
Dallas police Sr. Cpl. Gerardo Monreal said dispatch received a call from officers about the animal Tuesday morning.
The officers, who were chasing two people believed to be burglars, saw the reptile when they chased the pair inside a home on the 2700-block of Seevers.
Officers arrested the pair and then asked dispatch to call animal services. Animal services wrangled the animal, placed it in a box and removed it from the home.
