Garland Police Name Suspect in Reporter Jay Torres' Murder

Motive had to do with lawsuit involving house sale, police say

Garland police named a suspect in the murder of reporter Jay Torres Tuesday and said the crime had to do with a threatened lawsuit over a house sale – not Torres’ journalism work as some had speculated.

Homicide investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Anibal Edilfredo Chirino Mejia, 23, of Garland.

Mejia has not been arrested and police are looking for him.

Torres, who worked for the Star-Telegram’s Spanish-language publication, was also a realtor and involved in house sales.

Police said a search of Torres’ phone revealed that Mejia had threatened to file a lawsuit against Torres.

Torres, 57, was found in the backyard of a home in Garland June 13.
