Garland Officials Tackle Growing Mosquito Problem

If you think it is getting difficult to walk outside without getting mosquito bites, you're not alone.

Recent rains and floods have helped the mosquito population boom in North Texas, and the City of Garland announced aggressive measures to tackle the problem.

Garland's Environmental Health division has suspended most routine activities to focus the entire staff on mosquito abatement and prevention during the next few weeks, city officials said in a statement.

Licensed staff members are set to spread larvicide in dozens of Garland parks and greenbelts where mosquitoes tend to breed. The chemicals used will prevent mosquito breeding for approximately 30 days, according to officials.

The Garland Health Department asks residents to help efforts against mosquitoes by draining any standing water. Using bug sprays containing DEET and wearing long sleeve clothing can also help against bites.
