Nothing sends a positive message about reading like a crass photo of a kid with his head in a trash can.
A Dallas-area parent is outraged over a staged photo in which her 11-year-old son appears face-first in a trash can with a woman appearing to help him -- the caption says: "I'd rather be reading."
The Dallas Morning News reports the photo, in which the boy, Ladarion Neal, looks like he's vomiting, was put on a school bulletin board as part of a reading initiative.
Shamica Neal, the boy's mother, has filed a grievance with the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. The district spokeswoman, Angela Shelley, declined comment.
Neal said she didn't give permission for the school to take a photo of her son, who was sick that day and even took medication in the nurse's office at Blanton Elementary School.
Ladarion said a librarian asked him to pose, but he was confused when he said OK. He added that it was "really dirty in there."
