Galveston Trolleys to Run Again, Idle Since Hurricane Ike

Trolleys will be running again in Galveston after service was washed out when Hurricane Ike struck in 2008.

The Galveston City Council on Thursday voted to move forward with restoration of the trolley system.

The Galveston County Daily News reports the project will use Federal Emergency Management Agency funds, insurance proceeds and cash reserves.

The system will include nearly 7 miles of restored track and four diesel-powered trolley cars. Track repairs are expected to be completed by 2016. Full service is not planned until the summer of 2017.

The trolley had experienced declining ridership and increased maintenance costs before Ike swamped parts of Galveston in September 2008.
