Frisco Quarterback Shines On Field And Stage

NBCUniversal, Inc.

At Frisco's Wakeland High School final preparations are underway for this year's theater production of Mary Poppins.

"It's massive," said theater director Alesha Tatum-Howe. "We started rehearsals in September."

When it came time for casting, only one person could play Mary Poppin's Jack-of-All-Trade's friend, Bert - senior Mason Doerr.

"I started practicing before school even started," said Doerr. "I was in my garage tapping and doing everything for this play."

The role requires pitch-perfect singing, quick feet and strength to dangle high above the stage.

It's something Mason can handle because he's been under the bright lights before.

Last semester Mason led the Wakeland Wolverines football team to a winning season and Co-District champs as starting quarterback.

Head football coach Marty Secord said he's never coached a kid like Mason in his 33 years.

"Let's just say the first time I watched him as a freshman, I didn't really know he'd be our quarterback as a senior."

His coaches and directors say Mason earned both leads with an unmatched passion and work ethic.

Mason spent all summer practicing for his role on the field and on the stage.

"I didn't get to have much of a summer but I was doing what I love," said Doerr.

"I think that's what you see in the theater and out on the field," said Secord. "It's an amazing combination."

Doerr will graduate from Frisco Wakeland in the spring. He hopes to play football and continue his love for theater in college.
