Frisco Group Surprises Mothers for Valentine's Day

A group of mothers from Frisco planned a Valentine’s Day surprise for women in the community who might not otherwise get to celebrate the day

"It makes my heart feel right. It makes my heart feel good," said Cate Biggs, who organized the event.

Biggs, a mother of four, started working with other mothers a few years ago to create a special network of support within the city. This year, her efforts helped establish a certified non-profit, Frisco Moms Care.

"No mom has to suffer alone," Biggs said, “The community cares. The women in our community care a great deal for each other.”

Saturday morning, a group of them came together to show just how much they care. Several mothers spent the day packing gift baskets with candy, flowers and other items to deliver to mothers in need

“There are moms who have lost their husbands, and there are moms who have lost their children,” explained Biggs. “I think it means a lot when you see that other people care when things seem really bad on your side of the picture.”

They had seven mothers to surprise, all selected from nominations by members of the community.

“We wanted to have these baskets for them, so they've got something there when they wake up and something to remind them that they have somebody thinking about them,” said mom, Melanie Waight.

The first surprise Valentine’s delivery made by Frisco Moms Care was in 2013. Biggs cried the whole way home, overwhelmed by how meaningful she found the experience.

This time, her feelings were no different as she approached the home of a mother whose husband recently died.

"This person needs us,” Biggs said, as she pulled in the driveway.

At the door, Biggs was greeted by a woman whom she had only met once.

“I was just stunned, just stunned. Very touched that she remembered me,” said Melitta Towson.

Towson’s husband passed away last year.

“It'll be a year in May,” said Towson. “After time goes by, you feel a little forgotten. But I know that I have strong faith and God is always watching me and putting people in my life, like Cate, to bring me things and just make me feel loved.”

Towson was only Biggs’ first stop of the day, but she was a reminder of why her group is important.

“I want to just extend my heart to more people,” she said. “Sometimes caring is a lot more simple thank you think.
