Friends in Keller Pray for College Student Missing in Alpine

Zuzu Verk disappeared Oct. 12

About 100 friends of Zuzu Verk gathered for a vigil at a Keller park Monday night to pray for the missing college student.

"She's a real light for a lot of people," said longtime friend Andy Doggett. "And just know that that light's not out, and that light's coming home."

Verk disappeared nearly two weeks ago in Alpine, where she is in college studying conservation biology.

Police are treating her disappearance as a crime and Wednesday named her boyfriend, Robert Fabian, a suspect in the case. Fabian has a lawyer and has not been cooperating with police in the investigation, police said.

Investigators have said several members of Fabian's family are also persons of interest in the investigation.

"It's frustrating that we can't do more to help from where we are," said Verk's former teacher Shannon Jones. "It is a mystery. I wish there were more information being released but I understand the police need to do what they need to do."

At the vigil at Bear Creek Park, Verk's friends shared memories and tried to keep things positive, just like they say she would want.

A longtime friend said her optimism is contagious.

"She changed me, she really did," said Joshua Martin. "I still wake up with that positive message."

"Anybody who's ever met Zuzu is head over heals in love with her," said Hannah Lewis, who helped organize the vigil. "She's just the best person ever and it's not a biased opinion."

They sang one of her favorite songs, "Fix You" by Coldplay.

And they hoped that somehow she could hear them.

"Zuzu is going to come back and she's going to live out all her dreams," one friend said.
