Members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity — in Dallas for their district meeting — spent Wednesday spreading throughout the neighborhood to pick up trash, cut grass and rake leaves.
More than 1,000 fraternity members from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana traveled to Dallas for their conference at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel Wednesday through Saturday.
One of the fraternity's main missions is to give back to the community, so nearly 100 members gathered at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Complex to help.
Their service project helped an existing project already started by the city of Dallas, and local business owners to spruce up the area.
"This is wonderful," said City of Dallas office of economic development senior coordinator Venus Cobb. "This is our second cleanup with Fair Park Merchant Association, but the Omegas came out in big numbers."
Fraternities have recently had a bad light put on them, so members at the service project hope service projects like these will change those opinions.
Fraternities may not always be seen in the best light," Omega Psi Phi district marshal Rodney Johnson said. "But we work very, very hard. We work very, very diligently, making sure we make a difference."
