Fort Worth Pushing Forward With New 160-Acre Park in Alliance Area

The area along Interstate 35W near the Texas Motor Speedway used to seem like the middle of nowhere, but these days you can't make that drive without seeing something new.

The Alliance corridor, as it's become known, is booming. And while you'll find all sorts of new housing developments, businesses and restaurants in the area, there's one thing it doesn't have: a city park.

That's about to change.

"It's definitely needed," said David Creek, assistant director of planning and resource management for the Fort Worth Parks and Recreation Department. "The north section of Fort Worth is one of the fastest growing areas we have. So for us to meet the park needs for that area, to be able get a 160-acre piece of property up there, for us was significant."

A company called Hillwood Properties agreed to provide the land for a park in the area. The city will be responsible for developing it.

Alliance Park, as it will be called, will be located off Litsey Road, just east of I-35W and just south of Texas Highway 114.

Creek said the park will be home to all kinds of sports fields, a playground, trails and possibly a skate park.

"We already have the dollars for Phase I," Creek said. "Now, we're trying to work on the dollars for Phase II."

Tuesday night, they'll ask for the City Council's approval to apply for a $1 million grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife to help pay for the project. They already received a $1 million grant last year to help cover the Phase I costs.

Creek said the goal is to begin designing the park later this year. They hope to have it open sometime in 2019.
