Fort Worth Private School Opens Concept Playground

Trinity Valley School opened up the school year with new educational spaces based on brain science, according to administrators.

Almost 40,000 square feet of space was added to the campus and an additional 33,000 square feet of existing space was remodeled.

The new space includes a playground unlike most in North Texas.

TVS has partnered with TCU's Dr. Deb Rhea, who has direct experience with the Finnish school system, to create the playground concept in Fort Worth.

Students have multiple outdoor recesses, or "brain breaks" throughout the day to impact creativity and focus in the classroom.

The playground is designed as a natural, park-like setting to leave the landscape to the child's imagination.

It includes a drawing board, a spider web structure, a turf covered hill and other non-traditional features.

"This place created with lots of thinking and research. How do we have an outdoor classroom and how would kids be able to socialize and play in a way that we don't tell them how to play? They get to do what they want to do," said Blake Amos, Director of Experiential Education.

According to administrators, "research on brain science, the Finnish school system and the importance of strengthening community through connection directly influenced the design of the transformational educational spaces."
