The shooting was reported at about 6:43 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Loop 820 near Trinity Boulevard.

Police said they had received several calls about a traffic hazard in the area, and when officers arrived they said a man in his early 40s — whose identity has not been released — was standing in the middle traffic lanes.

The officers blocked southbound traffic for the man's protection and began speaking with him in an effort to get him out of the road, police said.

It is unknown what the man's intentions were or the circumstances that led him to be standing in the freeway, police said.

The officers saw what they reported to be a knife on the man's body, and he began moving toward the officers, against their commands. That's when two officers — including a sergeant with more than 25 years of experience — opened fire, striking the man.

The man was transported in serious condition to a Fort Worth hospital, where he remained as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police are reviewing the officers' body cameras and vehicles' dash cameras as part of their investigation.
