Fort Worth Officers Rescue Robbery Suspect from Burning Car

Two Fort Worth police officers are being hailed as heroes after pulling an unconscious robbery suspect from a burning vehicle earlier this month.

Fort Worth police released body cam video Thursday showing the officers running up to the damaged car and trying to open the crushed passenger door while a fire grew in the engine compartment.

As the passenger in the car regained consciousness, the officers began to pull him through the open window.

Once he was on the ground, the officers made sure the man was OK before moving him to a safe location and taking him into custody.

The rescued man's name and his condition following the crash have not yet been released.

Police said Thursday the driver of the car crashed during a chase with officers that reached speeds of 100 mph. The driver was being pursued because the vehicle matched the description of a getaway car used by three people who robbed a homeowner at gunpoint only moments before.

The robbery victim told police he'd arrived at his home on the 7400 block of Avington Way to find three people exiting the residence with his property. One of the three pointed a 9mm handgun at the victim and told him to stay back.  The trio then got into a silver Dodge Avenger and sped away.

Officers spotted the vehicle a short time later on Sycamore School Road and tried to get the driver to pull over. The driver refused and the chase was on.

The chase ended when the driver collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck at the intersection of California Parkway and James Avenue.

Officers can be heard on the video saying one of the occupants ran from the scene, leaving his trapped friend behind. That person, as well as two others, were eventually caught by Fort Worth police.
