Fort Worth Officer, Firefighter Honored Tuesday

A Fort Worth police sergeant shot in the line of duty earlier this year is now Fort Worth South Rotary Club's "Officer of the Year."

Sgt. Shane Drake was shot while doing a welfare check in late January. Police say a man shot Drake two times, with one bullet hitting him in the stomach.

He spent 13 days in the hospital before leaving to recover at home.

The Rotary Club presented him with this honor at the Colonial Country Club Tuesday.

They also named a Fort Worth "Firefighter of the Year" during the ceremony.

Captain Bobby Washington, Jr. received the "Firefighter of the Year" award for his excellence in upholding the department's values like courage and duty for 25 years.

Washington says he enjoys helping people and solving their problems in some of their darkest times.

We reached out to Sgt. Drake for comment, but he said the other officers working the night he was shot deserve more attention than he does.

Organizers say both men were picked by their departments.

They were chosen for their commitment to the community and bravery in keeping Fort Worth safe.
