A Forth Worth officer charged with beating a woman turned himself in to Tarrant County Jail authorities Friday, a police spokesman said.

Stephen R. Vega, 41, and a 38-year-old woman, who is described as an acquaintance, got into a fight just before 9 a.m. Monday in the 2600 block of West 7th Street, Sgt. Pedro Criado said Friday.

Officers were called to the disturbance, but when they arrived Vega had left the scene..

Vega was on-duty at the time, but was wearing civilian clothes. He was assigned to the gang unit, Criado said.

Arrest warrants were issued for Vega Wednesday.  He now faces charges of official oppression and assault, with bond on both charges set at $10,000 each.

Vega, who has been with the department since 1991, has been placed on restricted duty as an internal investigation continues, Criado said.

Police said the woman was injured.
