Fort Worth Improving Signage for Tourists

For those who call Cowtown home, getting around the city's major attractions is pretty easy.

But for visitors from across the world it can get a little confusing at times between the Fort Worth Stockyards and Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, for example.

Now, the city and its tourism and area partners are mapping out a solution between the Stockyards, Downtown and the Cultural District.

Every day, tourists visit from across the country and around the world, no matter what the Texas weather provides.

For some, they want to see the history, and for others it's a chance to see a rodeo and cowboys. But getting from the cowboys in the Stockyards to museums of the Cultural District requires some driving and guidance for anyone unfamiliar with Fort Worth.

"We get about 6.5 million tourists in Fort Worth every year and more every year. That's up about 20 percent, [and] we need to help them out," said Andy Taft, with Downtown Fort Worth Inc.

The city, DFWI, the Stockyards and Cultural District teamed up to do just that by setting up new maps across those three tourist destinations to show those new to town how to get around.

"And then when they get out of their car they have these way finding signs to help them get around on foot," Taft said.

The walking maps aren't the only thing that's being added at the three locations. Driving signs will also go up and are already showing up near the Cultural District.

"So what we're trying to do is help both the pedestrian and the person in the car get to their destination," Taft said.

Such roads do exist, but they have seen better days and can be hard to see at times if you're not looking for them.

"They're a little bit faded. They're well above eye height," Taft said. "The driver wants to see something a little bit lower, so we think that in all three districts having these lower more comprehensive way finding signs makes a little more sense."

As they hope to make it easier for those tourists hoping to make that return trip to Fort Worth.
