The superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District, Walter Dansby, has resigned.
Dansby announced his resignation during Monday night's school board meeting. The board met behind closed doors for four hours before voting six to three to accept Dansby's letter of resignation.
Dansby is one of the highest paid superintendents in the state with an annual base salary of $338,000. He has more than two years left on his contract with the district.
NBC 5 confirmed Wednesday morning that the school district will honor Dansby's existing contract and then some, according to district spokesman Clint Bond and Dansby's retirement and release agreement.
When Dansby's resignation becomes official, he'll receive $306,000. On that same day, he'll be named ambassador of public relations and placed on leave.
While on leave Dansby will be paid an additional $244,000.
Then, in January 2015, he'll be paid the final $356,000 for what would have been the final year on his contract.
That's a total of $906,000.
It still remains unclear as to what exactly led Dansby to retire. He was named superintendent of the district in February 2012.
Dansby has spent his entire 39-year career working for Fort Worth schools.
