Former Texas Banker Gets Prison for Embezzling Nearly $366K

A former East Texas banker must serve more than three years in prison for stealing nearly $366,000 from accounts including money being saved for Christmas.

Deborah Cornett was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Tyler. The 55-year-old Murchison woman last June pleaded guilty to embezzlement by a bank employee.

Cornett from late 2007 to May 2013 worked for First State Bank of Ben Wheeler. Prosecutors say Cornett stole from payroll accounts, Christmas Club funds, certificates of deposit and through bogus loans.

Christmas Club accounts are when customers save money throughout the year for the holidays.

Cornett, who was sentenced to 41 months behind bars, must also repay the stolen funds.
