Former Soldier Gets Probation For DWI Deaths Of 2 Workers

A former West Texas soldier has been sentenced to 10 years of probation after being convicted of killing two workers at a construction site while driving drunk.

Jan Michael Nieves Delgado was found guilty of two counts of manslaughter for the 2014 deaths of 54-year-old Jimmy Joe Broadstreet and 39-year-old James Green.

The jurors who convicted the 20-year-old sentenced him to probation on Friday after his attorneys asked them to show mercy. Nieves, who had been stationed at Fort Bliss, faced up to 20 years in prison on each count.

Family members of the victims said they were disappointed by the sentence, which included a $20,000 fine.

Prosecutor Rebecca Tarango told the El Paso Times she sought a sentence that would "serve as a deterrent to potential drunk drivers."
