Former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter Build Habitat for Humanity Homes in Dallas-Fort Worth

A former president of the United States is in DFW all week helping make a huge difference.

The 31st annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project kicked off Monday in Fort Worth.

The former president, and his wife, were on hand to help Habitat for Humanity build and repair more than 100 homes in Dallas and Fort Worth.

"He's getting after it," said Trinity Habitat for Humanity executive director Gage Yager. "He challenges everybody else to follow his example, which is absolutely wonderful."

The Carters were assisted by an estimated 5,000 volunteers from all around the United States.

"We just think it's a great opportunity for someone who hasn't owned a house, or maybe lost their house or something, to own a house," said volunteer Mike Aycock.

Aycock, and his daughter, Nikki, have helped with three of the Carter's work projects. They appreciate their support on putting a spotlight on the organization.

"It's impressive," said Mike Aycock. "He has put so much time into it. You think of all the volunteers and people he's brought to Habitat over the years. It’s just phenomenal."

"It's really special because it's such a great cause, and having him here, it just shows how truly dedicated he is," said Nikki Aycock.

The Carters will spend the first part of the week in Fort Worth, and then finish up in Dallas.

"It's not about the house," said Yager. "It's about the transformation. It's about what the house does for the family and for the neighborhood."

This is the first time the Carters have held one of their work projects in DFW.
