SMU will honor former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush Wednesday with the Medal of Freedom award.

“It is awarded in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the advancement of democratic ideals and to the security, prosperity and welfare of humanity,” SMU said in a news release.

The ceremony will take place in SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

According to SMU, the Medal of Freedom is the highest honor the Tower Center bestows. Previous honorees include Tony Blair, John McCain, George H. W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Colin Powell, and Tommy Franks.
