Former Mayor Sentenced to 60 Years for Child Sex Abuse

A 59-year-old former Central Texas mayor has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

An attorney for ex-Nolanville Mayor Charlie Lee Stewart says Tuesday's sentence will be appealed.

Jurors in Belton on Oct. 2 convicted Stewart of repeated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl during several incidents since 2011.

Stewart was arrested in July 2012 following an investigation that began when hospital officials contacted police about a possible abuse victim.

Stewart in May 2010 was sworn in as mayor of Nolanville, a town of about 4,300 located 60 miles north of Austin. He was ousted in September 2012 after missing three consecutive Nolanville City Council meetings.
