Former Dallas County Employee Accused of Stealing $130,000

A Dallas County employee who had access to a courthouse vault has been arrested and accused of stealing $130,425 from the District Clerk's Office.

Florretta Hampton, 41, a former clerk manager for the District Clerk's Office, was arrested Tuesday on an outstanding warrant for theft by a public servant, a felony, following an investigation by the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.

In her position as a clerk, Hampton had access to a safe which held payments by felons who owed fines and court costs, The Dallas Morning News reports. The theft occurred on April 1.  Hampton resigned from the District Clerk's Office in August after she was put on unpaid leave following the discovery of missing funds.

Hampton was questioned by the Dallas County Sheriff's Department detectives Wednesday and transported to the Dallas County Jail.

Investigators said Dax Raymone Williams, 41, has also been jailed in connection with the theft.

Hampton and Williams are being held on bonds of $100,000 and $50,000, respectively.
