A former Austin police detective has been indicted on a manslaughter charge in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man last year during a bank robbery investigation.
A Monday statement by the Travis County District Attorney's Office says a grand jury indicted former Detective Charles Kleinert in the July 2013 death of Larry Eugene Jackson Jr. Conviction of the second-degree felony is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Authorities have said Kleinert tried to question Jackson after he tried to enter the locked doors of a bank while a robbery was under investigation. After Jackson tried to flee, the pair struggled and Jackson was shot.
Kleinert turned himself in and was released on a $100,000 bond Monday. A call to a number listed for him wasn't returned.
