FootGolf Giving Allen Golf Course a Leg Up

A new game is catching on in Collin County, and it's breathing new life into a golf course in Allen.

Instead of golf clubs, players are packing carts with soccer balls for a round of FootGolf.

"I had no idea what it was. I had to kind of Google it to find out," said footgolfer Todd Rice.

"I wasn't sure if it was some weird European fad," said Allen resident Kirsten Knutson.

FootGolf combines soccer and golf. It's popular in Europe and is growing in popularity in the United States.

FootGolf is now offered at hundreds of golf courses across the country including the Courses at Watters Creek in Allen.

Todd Rice grew up playing soccer and said he never stepped foot on a golf course before Watters Creek began offering FootGolf in June.

"It really is bringing in, drawing in people that have a background in soccer that necessarily haven't played golf before," he said.

The rules of FootGolf are almost the same as regular golf except for, instead of swings, you have to try to get the ball in the hole in as few kicks as possible.

The cup in FootGolf is 21 inches wide instead of 4.25 inches in regular golf.

Golf Services Manager Jeff Holt said the game is bringing a different breed of athletes to the links and a new revenue stream.

"We do probably 20-30 rounds per week and we feel like that's going to grow as the word gets out," Holt said.

FootGolf is $14 per person for nine holes.
