Up to a foot of rain has fallen in a 12-hour period, causing flash flooding in the Austin area.
National Weather Service meteorologist Pat McDonald said Sunday that over a 12-hour period, the Barton Springs subdivision north of Austin got 12.1 inches of rain and downtown Austin received 10.6 inches.
He said there have been numerous water rescues in the area. More rain is forecast in the coming days.
The downpours may not help alleviate the drought in some parts of Central Texas, as the heaviest rains fell downstream from two lakes that are at near-record low water levels.
The deluge in Austin forced Austin City Limits Music Festival organizers to cancel the final day of the two-weekend event.
