Fireworks Company Issues Sparkler Recall

A fireworks manufacturer has issued a recall of one of its products.

Jake's Fireworks is recalling its Yo Yo Sparklers.

The company said the sparklers can burn faster and with a larger flame than normal toward the consumer's hands, posing a burn hazard.

So far, the company has received 12 reports of incidents resulting in second-degree and third-degree burns.

At least one of the reported injuries is a Springtown, Texas, woman who was released from Parkland Memorial Hospital's burn unit Thursday night with second-degree burns to her left hand.

"It's most of my hand," said Kim Edwards by phone late Thursday upon arriving home. "The outside of it, the top part and my palm, and then inside of my fingers. It's more or less the whole hand."

Edwards bought the sparklers on July 2, the day before the recall was issued, so that she could show her 6-year-old niece a good show for the Fourth of July.

"I'm just so glad it was me holding on [at the time of the accident]," Edwards said Thursday, concerned for her niece's safety.

The Springtown resident added that she is worried others have not heard the warning about the recall and will attempt to light their leftover Yo Yo Sparklers.

"And when you think about a sparkler, you think about kids," Edwards said.

Edwards told NBCDFW doctors tell her that recovery time could last 3 to 4 weeks.

The sparklers are 13-and-a-half inches long, metallic gray in color on a wire stick. They were sold in multicolored packages containing four individual sparklers.

Consumers should not use the sparklers and should contact Jake's Fireworks for a full refund.
