Firefighters Give Thanks for Working on Thanksgiving Day

Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and home fire injuries, according to the National Fire Prevention Association.

That means, with hundreds of thousands of people putting their ovens into overdrive during Thanksgiving, firefighters are putting in extra hours to make sure people are safe.

“This year, not being at home, it's nice that family can come here and spend some time together,” said William Brewer.

Thanksgiving Day marks Brewer’s third shift as a firefighter with Dallas Fire Rescue Department’s Station 11 on Cedar Springs.

“It makes it better, knowing you can't spend time with your family, but you can help other people out, too. That makes it worthwhile,” he said.

Family members of some of the firefighters spent part of the day at the fire station having Thanksgiving dinner, but several emergency calls required firefighters to drop everything and get out the door in seconds.

“I have invested in water-proof mascara,” said Karen Brewer, William’s wife. “I get emotional sometimes, and I always tell him to come home.”

“You're thankful for every minute you get,” firefighter Demarcus Wilson said right before another alarm sounded. “I'm just thankful for my family always being supportive,” he added. “I'm thankful for these guys to make Thanksgiving somewhat like home.”
