Firefighters battled an apartment fire in the extreme heat Wednesday afternoon in east Dallas.

Crews were called to the Aspen Chase Apartments in the 11700 block of Ferguson Road just before 2:30 p.m.

Residents were evacuated as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames coming from the third floor of the 12-unit apartment building.

"[It's] very scary when there is a fire in an apartment, plus, on the third floor, too. So, you know, I just have to do what I have to do. Quick thinking, you know what I'm saying," said Byron Sweat, who made sure everyone was out of the building.

One resident was treated for heat-related issues. No one was taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

NBC 5's Julie Fine contributed to this report.
