Fired Central Texas Police Officer Indicted in Texting Case

Prosecutors say a fired Central Texas police officer has been indicted on allegations that he sent a text to tip off someone in a federal case.

Former Temple police Officer Erick French II was arrested Thursday on a charge of making a false statement to federal investigators. French, who's free on $25,000 bond, faces arraignment Sept. 19 in Austin.

Authorities say the 24-year-old Copperas Cove man is accused of lying to the FBI about sending a text to someone about a pending case. French was questioned twice in March in an investigation also involving the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Online court records don't list an attorney to speak for French, who was fired in July. He'd been a Temple police officer since 2014.
