Fire on “The” Flower Mound

Fire damages state historical site on New Year's Eve.

High winds, dry conditions and possible fireworks could be to blame for a fast moving fire at the naturally grassy area known as "the mound" in the Town of Flower Mound.

There are no injuries to report. The flames broke out around 11:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve.  Photographs show that the fire came within 50 feet of some homes on the east side of the mound.

The Town of Flower Mound's spokesperson tells NBC DFW that a definitive cause is still not known yet.

According to the town website, "the mound" stands 50 feet higher than the grasslands around it. It received its name in the 1840's. It remains under the care of The Mound Foundation.
