The fire was reported at about 3 p.m. Monday at Sunshine Recycling on the 2000 block of Ruder Street, near the interchange of Interstate 30 and Loop 12.

A thick column of gray smoke was visible from several miles away during rush hour as crews attempted to extinguish the fire.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said Monday evening that the fire consumed a large pile of metal made up of various items such as cars, appliances and other scrap.

Firefighters were working late into the night, digging out metal to expose hot spots, while others continued spraying multiple streams of water onto the pile.

There are no reported injuries, and Evans said the cause of the fire is not yet known.
