Fire Guts Oak Cliff Flower Shop

A fire destroyed a long-time Oak Cliff flower shop Wednesday morning.

Flowers by Conde, on the 400-block of Madison, caught fire at about 5:30 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, the building had smoke and flames coming out of the shop. Burglar bars kept firefighters out until they could use a saw to cut through the bars.

By the time they got inside, the building was completely engulfed.

Neighbors said the shop has been open for 45 years.

The shop's owner, Mary Jane Conde, told NBC 5 she did not have insurance.

In the years since her husband died, she said she'd been robbed by gunpoint, burglarized at the shop, but said she wants to reopen.

"I don't want it to be the end, I want to continue," Conde said. "I've been robbed, beaten, robbed, been broken into, I don't want to give up even with the fire. Maybe God has other plans for me."

The fire burned everything inside and there's nothing left to salvage, Conde said.

Firefighters said they haven't determined a cause for the fire.

No one was injured.
