Fire, “Explosions” Damage Mesquite Home

Firefighters say no one was injured in the blaze

A Mesquite family is now living in a motel after a fire destroyed their home on Sunday.

Mesquite Fire Capt. Jeff Miller said someone called 911 just after 4 p.m. and reported hearing an explosion along the 1400 block of Fernwood Drive.  Due to the nature of the call, firefighters arrived and began battling the blaze from a defensive posture.

The family told NBC 5 that firefighters believe the blaze began in the garage, but soon sparked several small explosions.

No injuries were reported, nor was there any significant damage done to the surrounding homes in the neighborhood. However, the home appears to be a total loss.

The homeowner told NBC 5 that her family was not home when the fire started. The family said they do, however, have homeowners insurance and will be staying in a hotel.

Fire investigators have not yet determined an official cause.
