Driver Killed on Interstate 20 Trying to Avoid Pallet in the Roadway

A driver in South Arlington died Monday after crashing into a tractor-trailer while trying to avoid debris in the roadway, police say.

Arlington police said the driver of a Hyundai sedan swerved to avoid a pallet in the road, lost control and drove across all lanes of traffic before colliding with a tractor-trailer shortly before 11 a.m.

The sedan then struck a pickup truck on the inside lane, forcing it into a concrete median.

The driver of the sedan, who was the only occupant in the vehicle and whose identity has not yet been released, was killed at the scene. The driver of the pickup was treated at the scene and released. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

While the crash was investigated, Arlington police diverted all westbound traffic off I-20 at the Cooper Street exit. Drivers were routed back onto I-20 at the Cooper Street entrance.

Westbound traffic was backed up beyond Matlock Road for most of the afternoon as police investigated the crash. At about 4 p.m., the roadway was reopened to traffic.
