Farmers Branch Hears Public on Housing Ordinance Banning Immigrants

Leaders of a Dallas suburb heard public comment on whether to appeal a ruling that overturned an ordinance banning immigrants in the country illegally from renting apartments.

The Farmers Branch City Council deferred a vote. No date was announced.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on July 22 struck down as unconstitutional and an encroachment on federal authority the ordinance for the city of nearly 30,000 residents.

The ordinance passed in 2008 would have required all renters to obtain city licenses and for a city official to deny licenses to anyone found in the U.S. illegally.

Farmers Branch is one of several U.S. cities targeting unlawful immigration by enacting renting restrictions.
