Family of Jorge Lopez: Funeral Instead of a Wedding

The one thing Luis Lopez wants for Christmas he can't have--his 20 year old brother, Jorge back.

"The timing, it's the worst."

Jorge was shot and killed for no apparent reason while stopped at a Garland traffic light Monday night.

"The detective asked me a few questions and then gave me the bad news," Luis said. "I couldn't believe it, I am still in shock."

Police suspect Jorge Lopez was the first of two people former Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Smith killed during a rush hour shooting spree that shut down westbound 635 for several hours.

"Things happen for a reason and maybe God has better plans for him."

Luis says Jorge was planning to ask his girlfriend of 3 years, Shelby, to marry him on Christamas day.

"They have been together for a long time, they were high school sweethearts, and he wanted to propose on Christmas."

Instead on Christmas Eve, Jorge's parents presented Shelby with the engagement ring.

"We knew that is what Jorge would have wanted."

The viewing for Jorge Lopez is Saturday from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Resthaven Funeral Home in Rowlett.

The funeral will also be there on Sunday at 1:00pm.
