FAA: Drone Came Close to Plane Near D/FW Airport

Pilot reported he had no time to take evasive action, FAA says

A remote-controlled drone aircraft came about 60 feet from a small plane flying west of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration says.

The pilot of a Cessna 182 reported the close call happened at about 2:30 p.m., about four miles west of the airport, said FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford.

The small plane was flying about 4,000 feet in the air – an unusually high altitude for a drone to be nearby.

The drone was reported to be about 60 feet to the left and about 50 below the plane, Lunsford said. The pilot said he had no time to take evasive action.

With the growing popularity of relatively inexpensive drones, hundreds of similar incidents have been reported across the country, according to the FAA.
