Ex-Student Sues SMU Over 2012 Sexual Assault

A former Southern Methodist University student has filed suit against the university, alleging that it created "a hostile, dangerous environment" for him immediately after he reported that he had been sexually assaulted.

The Dallas Morning News reports the student reported being sexually assaulted on campus in September 2012 by a member of a family prominent in the university's history. The suspect was arrested and indicted by a grand jury, but the Dallas County District Attorney's Office dismissed the charges months later citing a lack of sufficient evidence.

The lawsuit filed in Dallas Friday alleges SMU so botched the case that the student had to withdraw and give up a scholarship.

The newspaper withheld the plaintiff's identity in accord with its policy regarding possible sex crime victims.

SMU declined comment.
