Ex-Prison Nurse in Texas Sentenced for Drug Smuggling

A former nurse at a federal prison in Southeast Texas has been sentenced to three years in prison for smuggling heroin into the lockup.

Lakista Lashau Davis of Beaumont was sentenced Thursday by a federal judge in Beaumont. The 44-year-old Davis pleaded guilty last August to possession with intent to distribute heroin.

Prosecutors said Davis worked as a contract nurse at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Complex from November 2014 to March 2015.

Investigators said Davis conspired with an inmate to smuggle heroin into the unit for distribution in exchange for a $5,000 payment.

The nurse was indicted last April. Prosecutors didn't immediately provide information on the inmate allegedly associated with Davis in the heroin-smuggling effort.
