Ex-North Texas Sheriff Pleads Guilty in Licensing Scheme

A former North Texas sheriff has pleaded guilty to felony records tampering for his involvement with falsified state certification testing records.

A judge sentenced former Hill County Sheriff Michael Cox to four years' deferred adjudication, fined him $3,000 and ordered him to perform 80hours of community service.

He also ordered him to surrender his state peace officer's certification and formally resign as sheriff.

Deferred adjudication would expunge the charge from Cox's record if he successfully completes four years of probation.

His plea came one month after two of Cox's top deputies, former Chief Deputy Mark Wilson and Capt. Leroy Rodriguez, pleaded guilty to records tampering charges.

Both men were sentenced to three years deferred probation and ordered to surrender their law enforcement licenses.
