The former chief of a Harris County volunteer fire department accused of using department money for personal use has pleaded guilty to theft.
KHOU-TV reports Maurine Turrentine pleaded guilty to theft by a public servant Thursday. Authorities say Turrentine took more than $100,000 from the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department and used the money for shopping, vacations and personal loans.
As part of a plea agreement, Turrentine has been ordered to repay the nearly $57,000 she still owes over the course of five years. The television station reports Turrentine had struck a deal with the department to allow her to resign and repay the money over 44 years.
According to prosecutors, Turrentine has already repaid the fire department $60,000.
