Era ISD Campuses Closed, Cleanup Continues After Storms

Era Independent School District closed all campuses Friday due to extensive flooding and significant water damage in several buildings.

Officials say that the flooding could potentially affect safe travel and bus routes throughout the district.

"About seven classrooms right now are damaged, including the computer lab," said Era ISD Superintendent Jeremy Thompson. "We've got to do something to fix the problem on the roof so we don't have continued problems on the inside."

The district said that some elementary buildings were damaged by the storms Thursday night, and they will not be able to hold classes in those buildings.

"It's a little heartbreaking, it's a little disconcerting, but at the same time no one was hurt and that's the main thing," said elementary school principal Autry Hardy.

Teachers spent the day cleaning classrooms. Kindergarten teacher Lisa Jones' room was one of the worst damaged.

"I think it's just overwhelming, trying to figure out what needs to be taken care of first and prioritizing," she said. "Just taking it all in, it's a bit much."

Holes in the roof drenches school supplies.

"It's personal. This is one of their read-to-self folders. And her books are ruined. That won't be replaced," said Fones.

The superintendent scrambled to make repairs, knowing there's more rain in the forecast.

"We've got to do something to fix the roof so we don't have continued damage on the inside if possible," said Thompson.

Era ISD advised students and parents to check the district's website, school app and social media for additional updates.
