Elderly Mother Dead in Dallas House Fire

A fire at a Northeast Dallas home left an elderly mother dead and her son homeless early Sunday.

First responders arrived to find the home in the 11300 block of Gatewood Place completely engulfed in flames just after 4 a.m.

Firefighters said two people, an adult man and his elderly mother, were in the house when the fire began. The son was able to make it out safely, but neighbors told first responders a woman was still inside the house.

Due to the intensity and advanced stage of the fire, firefighters made the judgment to not enter the house, due to safety concerns, a fire spokesman said in a statement.

A team of cadaver dogs was called in to help in the search for the woman's body. Her body was found near the rear of the home, in what investigators determined to be the kitchen area.

A family dog was also lost in the fire.

The names of the victims was not released, and the investigation continues pending final medical examiner's results.
