Eight Families Displaced by Las Colinas Apartment Fire

Eight families watched their homes go up in flames Saturday morning as fire ravaged a Las Colinas apartment building.

It happened just before 5:30 a.m. at the Remington Hills apartment complex, which is located south of Texas Highway 114.

When Irving firefighters arrived on scene massive flames rose high above the building, lighting up the dark sky.

"We started an interior attack," said Battalion Chief John Sherburn. "But [the building] was far too gone."

Firefighters were pulled out and went into defensive mode, making sure the fire did not spread beyond the building.

Crews had the fire under control by about 7:30 a.m., but spent most of the day Saturday at the complex monitoring hot spots and demolishing the building.

"We're bringing it down to make it as safe as we can, so that reconstruction can commence in a safe way," said Sherburn.

Sherburn said one man was hurt getting out of the building. He was taken to the hospital to get checked out. Otherwise, everyone else was OK.

The American Red Cross is assisting eight families who were displaced by the fire.

The cause is under investigation.
