The state has given an East Texas town until July to prevent sewage from backing up into the homes and yards of residents.
People living in a neighborhood of Hooks, west of Texarkana, say since 2009 heavy rainfall has caused sewer overflows. Residents report it's not unusual to see wastewater back up into sinks and bathtubs.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has fined Hooks nearly $3,500 for continuing problems. The agency has given officials until July 26 to finally solve the matter.
Mayor Michael Babbs tells the Texarkana Gazette the problem stems from rainwater that infiltrates the wastewater system. He says efforts to address the backup so far haven't worked.
A small treatment station will be installed in the neighborhood that officials hope will prevent future overflow.
