Driver Killed When Big Rig Hit by Amtrak Train

The train was on its way to Fort Worth before continuing to Chicago.

Police in Central Texas say the driver of a tractor-trailer has been killed in a collision involving an Amtrak passenger train carrying about 170 people.

Police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox says the collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Monday near downtown Temple. He says the 18-wheeler driven by 58-year-old Randall Collier of Rogers crossed the tracks ahead of the train and was struck on the front passenger side.

Collier died at the scene. None of the train's passengers or crew was injured. It's not clear how fast the northbound train was traveling.

Wilcox says the intersection does not have crossing gates but witnesses reported hearing the train's warning horn as it approached.

The train was on its way to Fort Worth before continuing to Chicago.

It continued on its route after undergoing an inspection.
