Police say a motorist opened fire on a Carrollton woman in an apparent road-rage incident.

A Carrollton woman was nearly killed on the drive to a doctor’s appointment in North Dallas on Thursday afternoon.

Debra Mortenson was driving northbound on Midway Road near Frankford when an irate driver fired a shot at her at close range, police said.

"You just start realizing your mortality, and I just couldn't believe someone would do something like this," Mortenson said.

Viki Short, who was turning right onto Midway Road, witnessed the tail end of the what police have termed a road rage incident.

"She stopped right here, and I asked her what had happened, and she said, 'I've been shot at,'" Short said.

Mortenson said she doesn't know what she did to provoke the driver of the older-model, dark blue sedan to shoot. Police said they suspect she may have accidentally cut the other driver off.

"I keep thinking, 'Oh, if my head were a few inches further or back, you know, the consequences could be quite different," Mortenson said.

Mortenson walked away from the shooting with a shattered driver’s side window and a band-aid on her arm.

Short said she hopes the shooter hears Mortenson's story on the news and gets anger managment help.

If caught, the driver of the sedan will be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
