Filmmakers Show their Work on the Big Screen at the Asian Film Festival

Dozens of Asian and Asian American filmmakers will get their share their work on the big screen this week.

The 16th annual Asian Film Festival of Dallas kicked off Saturday and goes on until Thursday at the Angelika Film Center in Dallas.

The festival showcases 34 films and six short films by filmmakers from across the world.

One of the filmmakers is Alexis Nguyen, a student at UT Arlington, who showed her documentary “Ocean Waves”.

The documentary is about her father’s journey immigrating to the United States.

Nguyen won the college shorts section for the student shorts showcase.

She said the festival is important to her because it allows her and other Asian filmmakers a place to share their culture and lives with others.

"I feel like some of the representation in the media isn't an accurate representation of Asian Americans, so I feel like it's important to have a festival like this showcasing Asian actors and filmmakers making stories they would want to tell," she said.
